This is JASON FYLES and he goes to my university (Newcastle University, North East of England) He is 19 years old, 5’8, ginger hair and slim. He was last seen in the Sandyford area at 2:45am on Thursday morning and has not been seen since. He was wearing a blue shirt, grey cardigan, beige chinos and brown ankle boots. Everyone in uni is so worried about him along with his family and friends. We are coming together as a university to appeal for his safe return. It is thought that he lost his friends on the night out and tried to make his way back by himself. Please, I am begging for you to REBLOG THIS, even if you don’t live in Newcastle, or England. Every REBLOG means that someone else will see his face, they will know who we are looking for, and your followers could be the one to know his whereabouts. Stay safe Jason, we’re looking for you.

PLEASE. Nobody reblogged my own post on this which I posted an hour or so ago so I’m wondering if nobody will now. This guy is my friend. If I have ever sent you a nice ask or reblogged something of yours and it made you happy for a second (or even if I haven’t; this is about helping him, not doing me a favour) for God’s sake just help now, help to find my friend Jason. You want me to make him human to you?

Once we all grew beans in pots as part of a Biology experiment- the experiment failed miserably and made the whole lab stink, but his was the only bean that grew and he was actually pretty proud about it

He learned to knit as part of a school project where he had to learn a creative skill, and when a couple of people teased him about it he said “gender is a social construct” and carried on knitting like a badass

He loves the scene in The Great Gatsby where Gatsby throws all his silk shirts around and he and I used to giggle over it together

Once I asked him if he had a string of tinsel I could use in a photoshoot and he brought me a big cardboard box full of tinsel and fairy lights because he’s a helpful and lovely guy

He’s HUMAN and he needs our HELP and just PLEASE PLEASE FUCKING REBLOG THIS??? He’s been missing for four days now- when he went missing he would have been wearing his contact lenses and he won’t have had his (very thick) glasses with him so by now he’ll have had to take his contacts out and throw them away and he won’t be able to see well and oh God just please signal boost this

26.28 miles in 3 hours 5 minutes. It was pouring rain the whole time. I would get jelly legs every now and again making it difficult to skate properly. The first 5 miles were horrible, I couldn’t see myself finishing it. But then Andrea, Ruth and I stuck together sticking to a pace we knew we could manage. We sang Disney songs, shared strawberry laces and energy gel packets and made sure no one quit. There was a killer hill that we tackled by screaming the whole way up. We even did a short video at mile 15 which we uploaded to the NRG page whilst skating because we’re skilled like that. We definitely weren’t the fastest but we completed it and I’m pretty damn happy about that. It was awesome crossing the finishing line together knowing we’d stuck together the whole time. We’ve been able to raise £1,270 so far for Inspire Nottingham which we’re really pleased about. Today’s purchases; arm pocket and marathon socks because in a week’s time I will be skating a marathon. 26 miles on quad skates. The me from 5 years ago would never have believed that. I have roller derby to thank for giving me this drive and energy to keep challenging myself.

My training could have gone better considering that I’ve only made it up to 9 miles so far. I know I should have put more time in, I know this is going to be a struggle, I know there will be a point where I no longer feel like I am in control of my legs/skates. But I also know that I can do this. I am significantly fitter than I used to be and have good endurance which counts for something here.

Either way, I will need to keep going! It will help that my fellow team mates are participating and that we’re doing this to raise money for local charity Inspire Nottingham. If you’d like to sponsor us any donations would be massively appreciated! http://www.justgiving.com/nottinghamrollergirls

A Message of Respect: Oregon Student’s Anti-Rape Video Goes Viral

The rape trial in Steubenville, Ohio, earlier this month gave me yet another opportunity to remind my 20-year-old daughter of ways to avoid getting raped.

“Why don’t we teach guys ‘don’t rape?’” she asked me.

A video made by a University of Oregon sophomore is trying to do exactly that — in just 26 seconds. Called “A Needed Response,” it’s for “the Steubenville rapists…or any rapists out there” and has more than 1.4 million views after being posted on YouTube March 22.

Samantha Stendal, a cinema studies student from Sammamish, Washington, said the media response to the Steubenville rape trial inspired her to make the video. “I was reading about Steubenville and getting more and more angry about the coverage,” she told KGW News. “I wanted to make something that was more positive than what was being shown. We should be treating each other as human beings not blaming victims.”

The discussion asking what the victim could have done differently frustrated her, she told KVAL news. “I’m upset that in our culture that is one of the first questions asked.”

In the video, filmed in the style of a public service announcement, fellow student Justin Gotchall says, “Guess what I’m gonna do to her?” referring to actress Kelsey Jones, playing a woman who’s passed out and lying on a couch. It’s a scene eerily reminiscent of what happened in Steubenville in August when two high school football players raped a 16-year-old West Virginia girl who was unresponsive at times after drinking too much at a party.

But what happens next is the surprise.

I am extremely critical of myself. I’m constantly comparing myself to others in roller derby and rarely in a productive manner. I have only recently realised the progress I have made over time and how it really is all in my hands. It’s an obvious thing but difficult to make it sink in. I’ve started to make note of my accomplishments and areas to work on whenever I play a bout or participate in a scrim. It really helps me focus my effort and also shuts me up whenever I get negative about my ability.

My accomplishment at our rematch against Sheffield Crucibelles in November was that I wasn’t terrified when jamming, that I didn’t pick up too many penalties, that I was stronger and that I had decent endurance. I could now take hits and keep going. Next focus: jamming.

I didn’t expect to jam at all at the Co-Ed tournament given that our team’s line-up meant that we had sufficient strong Jammers but I mostly jammed. My accomplishment is that I survived. I had played Co-Ed within NRG but playing against male players from other teams would be a different story and this was an experiment for me. The teams in the tournament had really strong female and male players I wouldn’t normally expect to be playing against. I’m quite proud about the fact that they were trying to hit me off track and for the most part I held my ground and stayed on track.
Next focus: Agility and moving across the track more to get past walls.

In our game against Hereford a few weekends ago (which was our first win as NRG!), I definitely darted around the track more. I had a clearer idea of what I was doing and used some tactics we had gone over. Next: work on starts/initial pass so I can get lead more often. Actively push through/ destroy walls on my way through.
